Nollaig na mBan at Cloonacauneen Castle

January 5, 2020 @ 12:00 pm - 7:00 pm

Nollaig na mBan or Women’s Little Christmas, is an old Irish tradition celebrated on January 6th each year, originally created as a day where women got together for a much-needed rest after the stress of the Christmas season. The day marks the end of the 12 Days of Christmas and traditionally it would provide a much-needed respite from the business of the festivities, the women largely having bought the gifts, decorated the house and cooked many meals. In Ireland, women would gather in each other’s homes or local pubs for a few stolen hours of gaiety while the men stayed at home. This old Irish tradition was most common in the west of Ireland.

Nollaig na mBan this year falls on a Monday so the National Breast Cancer Research Institute have a unique celebration planned for Sunday, January 5th 2020 from 12noon in the stunning surroundings of Cloonacauneen Castle, a 15th century Norman castle located in idyllic countryside surroundings, less than 10 minutes from Galway City Centre.

On the day, guests will recall the traditions of the past, embrace the present and plan for the future, all in the company of their special women.

The event will commence at 12 noon with a drinks reception while listening to the very talented male voices of the A Capella Knights. A festive three-course lunch follows with guest speaker, Siobhan Murray, Twisting the Jar. Those attending will hear stories of long ago traditions from legendary Irish Storyteller, Eddie Lenihan.

Throughout the day guests will enjoy competitions, pop-up shops, table prizes, goodie bags and a fundraising auction with the legendary, Ollie Turner of Galway Bay FM, before dancing the evening away with music from Silkwood.

Tickets are €80 per person and can be purchased by contacting the National Breast Cancer Research Institute fundraising office at 091 863917 or by emailing: hello@breastcancerresearch.ie. This would make a perfect Christmas gift and with demand already high, best to get your tickets early to avoid disappointment as places are limited.
