Congratulations to Dr Niamh O’Halloran, PhD researcher in the Discipline of Surgery who was awarded the Future Projects Prize for her presentation – “Evaluating the Suitability of Adipose Derived Stem Cells from Cancer Patients for Use in Breast Regeneration”. Niamh, a medical graduate of NUI Galway, is undertaking her PhD research with support from Breast Cancer Research and when completed, intends to continue her surgical training. The award-winning presentation detailed her research which utilises tissue engineering strategies to create an implant composed of autologous adipose (fat) tissue for use in breast reconstruction for breast cancer patients who undergo mastectomy.
